The synthetic process incorporates treatment of alkali cellulose with propylene oxide and methylene chloride in an organic solvent-water mixture. The whole process is automatic and monitored by machines. This product does not contain any additives, animal organs, lipids or oils.

Physical properties: 1) Appearance: HPMC is a nonionic cellulose ether, white grayish-white powder or granule, odorless and flavorless, soluble in cold water, glacial acetic acid, ethanol, methanol and propylene glycol, slightly soluble in acetone depending on the degree of substitutions, practically insoluble in hot water, ethylene glycol and toluene. Technical specifications: 1) Methoxyl content: 28.0 - 30.0% 2) Hydroxypropoxyl content: 7.0 - 12.0% 3) Gelation temperature: 58.0 - 64.0°C 4) Loss or drying: ≤5.0% 5) Burnt residues: ≤1.0% 6) PH value (1% solution at 25°C): 4.0 - 8.0 7) Viscosity (2% solution at 20°C): 5 - 100,000mPa.s Physical properties: 1) Appearance: HPMC is a white or light gray pellet or fibril power with odorless and tasteless 2) Solubility: hardly dissolves in waterless ethanol, aether or acetone, expands as to clear or slightly muddy colloid solution in cold water; it can dissolve in some organic solvents or some water-organic components 3) Pellet: 100 screen passable rate is over 98.5%, 80 screen passable rate is 100% Dissolving process: HPMC will agglomerate when directly added to water and then dissolve. In this way it dissolves very slow and hard. Suggested methods as followers: 1) In hot water: add water in container to 1/3 or 2/3 of its content, heated to over 80°C, because HPMC doesn't dissolve in hot water, it uniformly disperses in hot water; add cool water or ice to the residual content, stir and cool down the mixture 2) Powder combination: mix HPMC with identical volume of other powder, disperses them sufficiently then add water to the mixture result HPMC dissolves without agglomeration 3) Organic solvent wet: dispersed or wet with organic solvents, such as ethanol, glycol or oil, then add water can cause HPMC completely dissolves Applications: HPMC is mainly used as dispersant in the production of PVC and as thickener, stabilizer, emulsifier, excipient, water retention agent, film-forming agent in petrochemical, building materials, agrochemical, ink, printing and dyeing of textile, paper making and cosmetics. In building construction it is used for brick laying, wall rendering, inlaying wall seams, it is suitable for dye-blending and pre-blending cement slurry and conductive to thickening, water-holding and coherence, enhances adaptability to pump slurry. In decorative construction it is used to stick up tiles and marble with high cohesive strength, at the same time it can decrease cement consumption. It also used for plastering with good workability and without cracking. In coating it is used as thickening agent which makes coated surface lucent. lustrous and fine, not peeling off, improving the fluidity. Used in colorful ceramic glaze as suspension agent and cohesive agent, it makes pigment disperse uniform in glaze and thicken coated layer due to the gelling feature. It also finds wide applications as the agent of thickening, coherence, moisture-holding, film-forming, stabilizing, emulsification, shaping in petrochemicals, building, printing & dyeing, tobacco, daily-use chemical, paper-making, leather, agriculture and forestry and others.
